Year 9 Football rue missed chances in National Cup!
The Academy Year 9 Football team lost out yesterday evening to a well drilled Headlands side from Bridlington. The team battled well, and on another night could have won the game with chances missed proving costly. The players who competed, played some excellent Football in parts, despite missing their talismanic captain Luke Salas and fellow midfielder Lochlan Fitzgerald. The team now look forward to the two remaining competitions of the year, in the Hull Schools Cup and the Hull Schools 5 a side competition.
The match started with Sirius on the back foot, with Robbie Hird, Jordan Wardell and Younis Al Shimmiri handling the big Headlands forward well. In attack Callum Magee used the ball well with Olly Russell working well up-front. The excellent pairing of Joseph Wood and Kenan Stephenson combined on many occasion to create space, but the final pass often went awry and chances went. Headlands went ahead after ten minutes with a well worked goal, before Stephenson hit a cracking shot from 25 metres out which clipped the cross-bar. Kieran Bartlett in goal commanded his area well again, and used the ball effectively. Against the run of play another neat move saw Headlands finish well for 2-0 half-time.
The 2nd half was more of the same, with Sirius playing downhill. Chris Brown was moved back into midfield and he used his size well to prevent the dangerous Headlands midfielder running the game. In defence Hird was outstanding, often covering well or blocking countless shots. Wood played through Russell for a big chance with fifteen left, with a smart save from the keeper pushing Russell wide who couldn’t find the empty net from a tight angle. Will Murphy and Luke Collingwood were thrown on to use their speed, and a Stephenson shot fell to Collingwood whose effort was saved off the line by the defender. Despite pushing and creating many chances, Sirius could not find the goal they needed, and lost out 2-0 at full-time.
