Year 9 Football team reach Hull Cup Quarter-Finals!
The Sirius Academy Year 9 Football team came through a tough match against the side that knocked them out of last seasons Hull Schools Cup, Winifred Holtby. The team played with great discipline to limit their opponents to few chances at goal, whilst creating several chances themselves. The team now look forward to a Quarter-Final clash with Endeavour High.
The game started with Sirius spreading the ball well on the large pitch with wingers Joseph Wood and Kenan Stephenson working hard going forward. The back four of Jordan Wardell, Lochlan Fitzgerald, Brandon Leigh and the excellent Robbie Hird dealt with everything Holtby had to offer, with goal-keeper Kieran Bartlett alert to any through passes. With fifteen minutes gone a defensive mistake was capitalised on my influential captain Luke Salas who squared the ball to Oliver Russell to stroke home for a 1-0 lead. The reminder of the half saw Callum Magee protect the back four well and Salas create several half chances, one of which Stephenson was unluucky not to convert.
The 2nd half saw Sirius cause problems through Will Murphy and Lukas Mikoliunas who both worked hard to pressure the ball. Against the run of play a penalty for Holtby was awarded for a push which was converted for 1-1. Sirius then upped their game further, with Chris Brown using his size and Luke Collingwood running tirelessly. Going into the last fifteen minutes the next goal would be vital and it proved to be Salas who strode through and rolled the ball home before repeating the feat five minutes later after great individual skill for a 3-1 victory.
Special thanks to Danny Rouse for his assistance with the team, and to Janice Hall for driving the team and support.
Please congratulate the following boys on their success, attitude and behaviour:
Kieran Bartlett, Brandon Leigh, Robbie Hird, Lochlan Fitzgerald, Jordan Wardell, Callum Magee, Luke Salas (c), Kenan Stephenson, Joseph Wood, Lukas Mikoliunas, Oliver Russell, Chris Brown, Luke Collingwood, Will Murphy.
