Year 9 Girls Rugby League Tournament success

[10 Jan 2016]

The Year 9 Girls played in the Castleford / Wakefield local competition in preparation for their Hull Schools Competition on 19th January and improved immensely throughout the tournament.
First up for the new looking Year 9 team, who gave debuts to five new players from last year, was the National Champions Castleford Academy.

Castleford Academy 3 Sirius Academy West 0
Sirius started the game very slowly and the experienced Castleford Academy side capitalised on three early knock ons in the Sirius half by punishing them with two early tries. Down the middle of the park Sirius controlled the big Castleford side, but down the wings there was a mismatch in size and speed as they went over for their third try. Sirius could not break through the organised defensive line and was very slow around the ruck which made life easy for the National Champions. The Sirius team knew they could have played a lot better than they showed in this game and made sure they upped their game in the second match.

Sirius Academy 4 De Lacy College 0
Sirius started the game at a lot faster pace, and the dangerous Danny Waters stepped her way through the defence to score a long range try. Sirius defence was a lot more aggressive as they forced the mistakes from the De Lacy side. Year 8 – Beth Dixon went over for the second try, showing real strength and pace as she grew in confidence. Again some good defence from Sirius, not letting De Lacy get out from their own try line led to another mistake and Lauren Sutton went over from close range. The final try of the game came from the impressive Mia Husband, who ran hard and fast through the defensive line to burst through and make it 4 – 0.

Sirius Academy 4 Minsthorpe 1
In their best performance of the tournament, Sirius played some outstanding attacking rugby, which resulted in two well deserved early tries. Danny Waters opened the scoring after stepping her way through the Minsthorpe defence, before Mia Husband scored the try of the tournament after some great support play and quick passing. Cameron Shakespear and Shannon Jordan were putting in some big hits in he the middle, whilst wingers Sam Tomlinson and Ellie Keating were making some good tackles out wide. The debutants Maddison Smith and Caitlin Barr were getting more involved and looking strong. Another well worked try was finished off by Danny Waters before Minsthorpe went over for a try of their own. But Sirius had the last word as the powerful Shannon Jordan crashed over from ten yards out.

Sirius Academy 3 Carlton Academy 1
Sirius rounded off the tournament with a convincing win over Carlton Academy. It was evenly matched for the first few minutes, but then Eve Blackman, on her debut showed what she could do when she ran with speed and power and managed to break the line and go over the tryline. Shortly after it was Cameron Shakespear who found a gap and showed her pace to race over to double the lead. Keila Allen was a willing runner as she came infield from the wing to take ball up well. The hard working Danny Waters went over for her fourth try of the tournament, again her agility and speed proving too much for the opposition. Some sloppy defence out wide saw Carlton go over for a try in the corner, making the final score 3 – 1.
