Year 9 Girls Rugby League Yorkshire Cup Winners
For the third year running the Year 9 Girls were once again crowned the Rugby League Yorkshire Champions after seeing off a very strong St John Fisher team at Wakefield Wildcats Stadium.
The Sirius girls started well and got themselves into some good field position after good strong runs from Saffron Jones and Molly Bigby. On the third tackle Kayleigh Waller found some space and burst through the gap with some excellent footwork to score the opening try, which she also converted to make the score 6 – 0. Sirius seemed to take their foot off the gas and found themselves making mistakes in the first few tackles in their own half. St John Fisher capitalized on this and went over for two quick tries, which they failed to convert, making the scoreline 8 – 6 at halftime. The girls knew they had to cut out the errors and control the ball better if they were to get back into this game. Again, the half started well, with Kayleigh Waller showing pure strength and speed to get over the tryline for her second of the game, putting Sirius back in front at 12 – 8. Sirius defended well for the next set with Amelia Longden and Mia Duke really putting their bodies on the line, but on the last tackle the Sirius team got caught offside and could not defend another set on their line as St John Fisher crashed over again. This gave the opposition confidence as they scored another try to extend their lead to 18 – 12. Sirius responded well, and after a fine run from Mike Duke which took them close to the tryline, a quick play the ball and a smart scoot from Molly Bigby saw her dive over from close range, Duke converted to make the scoreline level with five minutes remaining. Another strong set in defence gave Sirius the ball back in a good area and when Waller spotted a gap out wide there was no stopping her as she raced over for her hat-trick. Some good work in defence from Year 8’s Cameron Shakespear and Danielle Waters prevented St John Fisher from equalising and then on the final play of the game Mia Duke showed a clean pair of heels and she rounded the defence to go over and win the game for Sirius Academy. The scoreline finished Sirius Academy 30 St John Fisher 18 in a very hard fought match. The player of the match award went to captain Mia Duke.
Special thanks to Miss Martin, Mr Kay and Mr Basile for their support with the team.
