Year 9 Rugby boys win 2nd Hull Schools Cup!

The Sirius Academy Year 9 Rugby team won their 2nd Hull Schools Cup in three years after a comprehensive 34-6 victory over St Marys College. The team who have also this season won the Carnegie Champion Schools Yorkshire Plate competition, produced an efficient display to get head and stay in command of the Final against an opposition that reached the National Cup Quarter-Final this season. The team now look forward to next season when they hope to make the later stages of the County competition again.
The match started well for Sirius with forwards Rhys Purchon and Keane Stevenson laying a formidable platform, well backed up by the impressive Declan Jackson and Jack Arnett. As the game settled down some uncharacteristic unforced errors put Sirius under pressure, however good defence by Kieran Bartlett, Jackson and Tyler Hackett kept Marys at bay. A scrum deep in Sirius territory saw the 1st score with Mikey Lewis opening a gap for the electric Jack Scottow to race away from fully 90 metres to score with Lewis goaling for 6-0. With Man of the Match, Connor Matthews and Lewis dictating play smartly with the ever energetic Luke Moss chiming into the line at will and displaying his usual levels of bravely when needed, Sirius doubled their lead when Scottow raced around the defence for 12-0. On the stroke of half-time Jackson hit a ball at great speed and raced through with another Lewis goal putting Sirius 18-0 up.
The 2nd half saw Reece Gooch and Callum Riley look dangerous with every touch on the right side, with Matthew Wilson adding some strong presence in the middle of the pitch. Hackett was next over off a Matthews and Lewis combination before a cross-field kick from Matthews found Joseph Sedman who crossed for 28-0. Marys battled back with a try of their own , however Sirius were not to be denied with Dylan Hepworth making some quick breaks out-wide and Jack Hassard made some smart contributions from full-back. It was Jackson who finished the scoring with another strong charge with Lewis adding his 5th success for 34-6.
