Year 9 Rugby team into Yorkshire Cup Quarter-Final!
The Sirius Academy Year 9 Rugby League team safely moved into the Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup Quarter-Finals with a comprehensive 40-10 victory over North Halifax school (Calderdale). As defending champions the team scored some excellent tries in cold conditions but know there are areas to improve in their Quarter-Final clash away against St Wilfreds (Wakefield), a match they have to win to qualify for the National Cup stages.
The match started in cold conditions that were to affect the skills levels of both teams throughout. The Sirius boys struggled to hold the ball early but as they settled the forwards in Kai Thorpe, George Tyson-Wilson, Tom Jordan and Jay Kirkland laid the platform for Harry Whittles and Mikey Lewis to move the ball and find willing runners in Ryan Addinnall, Josh Atkinson and Brett Dorley. Atkinson crossed first after good hands, quickly followed by Dorley who showed good strength to ground the ball for an 8-0 lead. Lewis threw an excellent dummy to glide over next with Thorpe goaling for 14-0 before Addinnall sprinted clear for an 18-0 lead. Halifax hit back with a try from their strong running forward however Sirius quickly settled with Declan Jackson and Connor Cape-Melbourne running strongly supported wide-out by Callum Whilsher, Joseph Coates, Atkinson and Rowan Foster. Atkinson crossed for his 2nd on the stroke of half-time for a 22-4 lead.
The 2nd half saw Halifax cross early to pull the score back to 22-10 however an excellent Thorpe offload sent Joe Petty over and effectively end the game with Whittles goaling for 28-10. Atkinson grabbed his deserved hat-trick try before Coates sprinted away with a goal apiece from Whittles and Thorpe giving Sirius their 40-10 lead.
Special thanks to Cosi Basile for dropping the team at the venue.
