[16 May 2011]

The Year 9 Rugby team progressed through to the Hull Schools Rugby League Final, after winning the West Hull competition this evening at Haworth Park. The win saw the boys add to their impressive season which has seen them win the West Hull Schools League and now Cup, and will go on to play the East Hull winners and Yorkshire Cup Champions, South Holderness.

With several of the boys backing up from last nights outstanding Football performance, they again did themselves and the Academy proud advancing through undefeated, meaning that they are this year undefeated in both Hull competitions to date. The competition saw the face four Schools in short fifteen minute matches, however the boys handled the conditions and short matches extremely well.

The boys started against Hull Trinity House who provided a stern test with several of their players proving hard to tackle due to their size. However with Harry Tyson-Wilson, Liam Harris and Kieran Jones dictating play and willing runners in George Scottow, Jamie Warcup and debutant Peter Butcher, Sirius quickly got into their stride. Scottow crossed from 50 metres out showing great speed, quickly followed by Josh Jackson and Jones with Harris adding one goal. Further tries from Warcup (2) both goaled from Harris gave Sirius a 24-10 victory after two late Trinity tries.

Next up Sirius played their close rivals Kelvin Hall, with Liam Platten, Brandon Hepworth and Calvin Parker showing up strong. A delayed pass from Tyson sent Warcup over before Tyson stepped around the Kelvin defence to add a second try, Harris again converting both for a 12-0 win.

Wolferton were next up for the boys, again all the boys stood up and defended bravely against a much bigger team, led from the front by the impressive Benn Arbon and Warcup. Two tries from Warcup with Harris goaling both gave Sirius a deserved 12-0 victory.

The final match saw Sirius up against a spirited Sir Henry Cooper who despite their limited Rugby experience, gained much respect through their determination. However tries from Jones, Harris, Scottow, Platten and 2 from Louie Carmichael (complete with acrobatic celebrations), with goals from Harris (2), Jones and the strong-running Ben Ramsey giving Sirius a 34-0 victory.
