Year 9 Rugby team show spirit in defeat!

[28 Sep 2011]

The Academy’s newest Rugby League team showed great spirit and determination in their 1st ever competitive match tonight. The Year 9 team, had previously played one friendly match in Year 7, therefore did exceptionally well to hold their own against strong opposition in Wolferton and Longcroft.

The teams first match against Wolferton started well for Sirius with the player of the night Connor Giddings, showing speed and skill to dummy his way over from 50 metres out to give Sirius a 4-0 lead. Back came Wolferton to take the lead 6-4. Again with Giddings to the fore, he created space for the strong-running Mitchell Levi-Lewis to cross out-wide to re-take the lead 8-6. However credit to Wolferton who again came back to push themselves 12-8 infront. Excellent work from Alex Gibb, Liam Moss and Ellis Greendale saw Sirius fight back, with Moss crashing over with one minute remaining to level the scores at 12-12. Cruelly Sirius were to be denied with the last touch of the game, conceding a try to fall to a 18-12 defeat.

Next up the boys faced Longcroft. Sirius again started well with Jack Allott, Leroy Burton and the fleet-footed Jordan Lambert showing up well. Special mention to Ryan Burgin, who made countless copybook tackles and threw his body in the way of many an attacker! However two quick Longcroft tries put Sirius 8-0 down. Sirius then showed great team spirit and attitude to claw themselves back into the game with tries from Dylan Rawlings and Giddings to level the score at 8-8. Another late try however cost Sirius dear, leaving them with another close defeat of 14-8.
