Year 9 Rugby team start with close defeat

[12 Sep 2013]

The Sirius Academy Year 9 Rugby team began their Hull Schools League campaign with a narrow 16-14 defeat to South Holderness school in terrible conditions. Both teams where a credit in the wind, rain and cold, with the match been close fought throughout. The team now have 4 fixtures remaining to secure their place in the Champion Schools Yorkshire Cup, a competition that they won last season.

The game started with captain George Tyson-Wilson leading the way in defence and attack, ably supported by Kai Thorpe and Jay Kirkland. Harry Whittles provided the 1st try with a long cut-out pass sending Josh Lomax over wide out with Thorpe adding the goal for 6-0. Forwards Tom Jordan, Ryan Addinnall and Josh Kirby continued to work hard, and it was Year 8 student Mikey Lewis who created the next try with a high kick falling to Thorpe for 10-0. Holderness scored on the stroke of half-time for a 10-6 score-line.

Playing into the wind and rain Sirius started well with backs, Josh Atkinson, Kieran Sewell and Brett Dorley taking a lot of drives with Rowan Foster and Stephen Pougher defending well. Holderness scored two quick tries to leave Sirius 16-10 down with 10 minutes remaining. Enterprising play which was perhaps Sirius’ downfall saw them pull a try back with quick hands sending Lomax over however time ran out and a narrow defeat was suffered.

Please congratulate the boys on their hard work, behaviour and attitude:

Josh Atkinson, Kieran Sewell, Brett Dorley, Josh Lomax, Rowan Foster, Harry Whittles, Mikey Lewis (Year 8), Kia Thorpe, Josh Kirby, Tom Jordan, Ryan Addinnall, Jay Kirkland, George Tyson-Wilson, Stephen Pougher.
