Year 9 Rugby team through to Hull Cup Final!

The Sirius Academy Year 9 Rugby team marched into the Hull Schools Cup Final after a comprehensive 38-10 victory over Archbishop Sentamu in their Semi-Final clash. The team who won this competition in Year 7, are looking to add to their Yorkshire Plate trophy that they recently won at Wakefield Wildcats RLFC, but know they face a tough challenge in St Marys College, a team who beat us in the Hull Schools League and are currently still in the last stages of the National Cup competition. The Final will be held at Hull YPI, Chanterlands Avenue on Wednesday 29th April- 6:30pm KO.
The match started brightly for Sirius with Keane Stevenson and Declan Jackson leading the way with strong carries up the middle. Quick hands from the excellent pairing of Mikey Lewis and Connor Matthews created space for the electric Jack Scottow to race away with Lewis goaling for an early 6-0 lead. Kieran Bartlett was controlling the game well around the ruck, finding Rhys Purchon regularly to make good yards, with Tyler Hackett and Dylan Hepworth constant threats wide-out. As Sirius were short on numbers the backs of Callum Riley, Reece Gooch, Scottow and Jack Hassard came in looking for the ball, taking pressure off the forwards with the ever-reliable Luke Moss returning every kick with skill and bravery. Stevenson was next over crashing through off a short pass, before Archbishop hit back for 12-6. Lewis dummied his way through using excellent footwork, before Moss sent Scottow away from 80 metres off a scrum to give Sirius a commanding 24-6 half-time lead.
The 2nd half saw Harrison Longden make good yards up the middle in the early stages, with Hassard moving in-field to distribute the ball well. Gooch created two quick-fire tries for Riley, using great awareness and skill execution to send his winger away twice. Deservedly though it was Scottow who wrapped up the scoring, with his hat-trick try before Archbishop hit back with a last minute try to leave the score at 38-10.
Special thanks to Rachel Gay for her help with the team and also driving the bus.
