Year 9 Sirius West Girls crowned Hull Schools RL Champions

[22 Jun 2016]

The Year 9 Girls Rugby League team played in the Hull Schools Cup at the new Hull FC Training Facility on  Liberty Green, Chamberlain Road and came out as convincing winners with some fantastic team play on show.

Sirius Academy West 5 Sirius Academy North 0
Captain Danny Waters set the scene for the tournament as she stepped her way through the North defence on their first set of six. After that Sirius North really made West work hard for their tries as their defence got more organised as the game went on. Shannon Jordan and  Chloe Dunn ran the ball in well for West, making good yards forward. The lead was doubled just before the halftime break when Mia Husband showed great power and speed to go over the tryline. The Sirius West defence was solid as North struggled to break through, Danny Waters, Ellie Hinchcliffe and Amy Purdon were working well from the marker position as they limited Norths chances of making many yards forward. Kiela Allen was introduced and took the ball up Danny Waters scored two more tries in quick succession to double the lead to 4 – 0  before Maddison Smith showed real strength to take over three tacklers and still get the ball down.

Sirius Academy West 7 St Marys 2
The Sirius West side looked confident going onto the their second match, and started well, with a fine team try that was finished off by the impressive Ellie Hinchcliffe. Lauren Sutton was working well from the dummy half position with some good passing from the floor to put Sirius on the front foot, which saw Danny Waters go over for another try. St Marys had some strong players and broke through the Sirius defence to get a try of their own. Holly Dodsworth had been brought into the middle of the field with great effect and scored two tries showing great pace and footwork. St Marys continued to work hard and got their rewards with another try, but the game was sealed with 5 minutes remaining as Amy Purdon scored a great solo try proving she is back to her best after a long layoff through injury. Shannon Jordan powered her way over from close range before Holly Dodsworth rounded off a 7 – 2 victory.

Sirius Academy West 8 Archbishop Sentamu 0
Cameron Shakespear was brought back into the starting line up for this game and looked strong, with a try from the start as she broke through the line and outpaced the defence. Amy Purdon and Mia Husband scored shortly after as Sirius completed dominated in attack. The defence had also improved from the West side as they moved up well in their line, putting in some good strong hits. Eve Blackman came into the game more and was taking the ball up well. Danny Waters was organising her team and looking dangerous as she went over for two more tries.  Chloe Dunn was enjoying playing against her old school and was varying her game of running the ball in, but also finding a good pass to create space. Mia Husband found a gap and scooted over, then Holly Dodsworth extended the score to 7 – 0 before the try of the tournament was scored by Cameron Shakespear after a superb drop off from Danny Waters.

This very talented Year 9 side should now start to believe what they are capable of when they come back next year as they looked solid and defence and extremely good in attack proving that they should be worthy of a place in the National Finals as Year 10’s.

Please congratulate the Year 9 squad on being the Champions of Hull, and also on their outstanding commitment and behaviour.
Danny Waters, Holly Dodsworth, Cameron Shakespear, Mia Husband, Eve Blackman, Chloe Dunn, Amy Purdon, Lauren Sutton, Ellie Hinchcliffe, Kiela Allen, Shannon Jordan and Maddison Smith
