Year 9’s work hard to defeat Malet Lambert
An away match for the year 9 rugby team proved to be hard work of what should have been an easy win.
A turnout of 20 players for the match saw 4 new faces make the team for their first runout in a Sirius shirt. From the kick off Sirius were looking unstable with some simple mistakes. Just after the 6th minute of play Malet scored their first try under the posts to take the score in their favour 6 – 0. After a teamtalk and some inspiration from the captain Jack Hassard under the posts, the lads came out a different team from the restart, where a high hanging kick was sent downfield with an enraged defence making their way for the first tackle of the set. The pressure from the Sirius defence only let the mallet attack make 15 meters in 5 tackles; a turnover was made just 20 meters from the mallet line. From here the man of the match Brandon Sargeson ran in the first drive and powered through the defence to crash under the sticks and level the scores 6 – 6. The form continued from the restart, with a well executed set from Sirius that steered Taylor Eastwood through a gap and sent him 50 yards down the field to score in the corner to take the lead 10 -6. With 12 minutes left in the first half it was difficult not to anticipate another score from Sirius; however Malet lambert began to lift their spirits and match the pressure of Sirius to hold the score at 10 – 6.
The second half was restarted from a deep kick to the Malet forwards, who began to set the platform until an optimistic offload was read by Joe Laden, who intercepted the stray pass to run 40 yards down the pitch and follow up with a quick play the ball to see Taylor Eastwood crash over the line and extend the lead to 16 – 6. It almost seemed that there was no way back for Malet lambert. This assumption was soon eradicated as the opposition managed to crash over for two tries in quick succession to bring the score to 16 – 14. With just 5 minutes left, Sirius made two crucial interchanges that saw one of the oncoming players crash over for the final score to secure a Sirius win of 22 points to 14.
A huge congratulations to the year 9 rugby team and the new additions, who played their heart out to secure an away win against a tough Malet Lambert outfit.
